Only Stores announces its honorary spokesperson Mathilda Karel Spak,
who is over 99 years old, filed to run in the October 7, 2003
Californian Gubernatorial Recall Election.
Certain 99 Cents Only Stores shareholders paid the $3499.99 filing fee
and helped gather the signatures needed for Mathilda. About 99
signatures were submitted.
Mathilda is believed to be the oldest person ever to run for Governor
in the United States. She will turn 101 on September 5, 2003. Mathilda
was appointed 99 Cents Only Stores honorary spokesperson and
"ambassador for life" when she turned 99 in 2001.
Widowed at a young age, Mathilda persevered to graduate with a
business degree from Northwestern University. Mathilda went on to
build a successful career in insurance and real estate during the
1930's-50's, before retiring at age 58 in 1960.
Mathilda has been a lifelong volunteer for many worthwhile charities
and non-profits. She currently works four days a week as a hospital
and senior center volunteer and devotes the majority of the rest of
her week to helping charitable organizations.
Eric Schiffer, president of 99 Cents Only Stores said, "Mathilda, who
has been featured in People Magazine for her heroic lifelong
volunteering efforts, is a truly remarkable person. Mathilda is an
ideal candidate as she is bright, energetic, compassionate and
generous. She strongly believes in giving back to the community. Also,
Mathilda knows the value of a dollar, I mean 99 cents!"
Mathilda Karel Spak will make her first official public campaign
appearance at 7 a.m. on Thursday August 21 at the grand opening of the
newest 99 Cents Only Stores in Lynwood, California.
