Mohammad Al Niqua of Al Kut is among the first Iraqi clergymen to ask
leftists, including Democrats in America, to stop encouraging the
insurgents and terrorists who are doing their best to destablize the
country as it moves steadily toward a representative form of
government. Speaking to a reporter from Lisbon, the Tefla (Sunni/Shia
tefardim) priest stated, "Factions seeking to upset the government in
other countries want to make news about our remaining problems and we
are asking them, please, to stop this. If they truly care about the
lives of innocents, they will not encourage those who martyr themselves
and take those lives." Al Niqua further expressed his suspicion that
many of the reports of a worsening situation in Iraq were coming from
the insurgents themselves or from their sympathizers and supporters in
the region and around the world. "Every day our country grows
stronger," he continued. "The people, my people, are working on our
common problems and our future. The terrorists cannot stop this. Many
of my countrymen hate what they do and want to fight them. They only
kill innocents and people looking for job. We want the Americans to
leave, yes, but not so fast. Help us to destroy these killers first.
We need your help." Asked if he thought the Americans had come only to
steal Iraq's oil, Al Niqua responded, "They have helped us, even though
some of them have hurt us, but we still have much oil that Saddam was
not able to steal from us and we are keeping our eyes on the ball."
