---------------- --------------------------------- Ethiopia Fossil May Be From Early Primate Associatred Press, WASHINGTON,USA, Mar 5, 7:12 AM ET -- Six fossil teeth found in an Ethiopian desert and dated at about 5.2 million years may be from a previously unknown type of prehuman primate that was among the first to evolve from the common ancestor of humans and apes, a study suggests. The teeth have distinctive features that are thought to have existed among the first hominids to emerge after the ape and human lineages evolved apart some six to eight million years ago, researchers say in the journal Science. The researchers, led by Haile-Selassie of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, say that the teeth come from a hominid known as Ardipithecus kadabba, one of the earliest known human ancestors. A canine tooth in the assembly closely resembles teeth found in apes. The researchers say that the canine teeth were arranged so that they were sharpened against the lower premolars. This characteristic is common in both ancient and modern apes, the researchers say. Haile-Selassie and his co-authors suggest that Ardipithecus kadabba and the fossils of two other prehuman primates of about the same age may all be members of variation of a single genus of hominids. ... ................... Comment: There is still plenty of room for political/ historical/ archeological/anthropological research into Africa's current, recent, past and distant past. Indeed eager, qualified research scholars are plentiful in Africa. Yet Egypt's ancient pyramids - and the ancients centers of learning - have received far greater scholarly attention (and tourists) than the equally mysterious, ancient pyramids - and ancient centers of learning - of the Saharan region of West Africa. And there is still a lot we do not know about the great Nubian kingdoms. And the kingdoms of the people of maZimbabwe. And Carthage. When the early Arab traders arrived at the east coast of Africa, they found structured, vibrant societies of traders. What is the early story of the waSwahili? Evidence of vast cities and gay bathhouses may not be there. But the archeologist uncovers some bones, pieces of clay, shaped bits of metal or stone and maybe a 'unnatural' arrangement of stone - bits and pieces that 'speak to us' about a people, our ancestors. Perhaps there is a clue in the insistence of many whites that Egyptians and Carthagians are/were NOT Africans (just as a South American may insist that Spaniards are not Europeans.) Indeed, the archeological efforts in Africa are often funded and directed by (semi)private foundations. And generally the foundations do not fund black researchers - even, and especially, the emminent ones who may have keen research interests in their black civilizations, not among (white) priorities. Now, with regard to Africa's foundations .. Charlie .................. .............. "As a social anthropologist, I naturally accept and even stress the fact that there are major differences, both mental and psychological, which separate the different races of mankind. Indeed, I would be inclined to suggest that however great may be the physical differences between such races as the European and the Negro, the mental and psychological differences are greater still." L.S.B. Leakey, a noted archeologist (and white supremacist?)
