Default The Tahrs of Table Mountain

At times like this I find white communities in South Africa play right
into the hands of the likes of Mbeki and even Mugabe.

Here we have a hullabaloo over the culling of these exotic "goat like"
creatures who are apparently causing environmental damage to the good
tourist attraction in the fairest cape.

The parks board want to cull them to a) prevent further environmental
damage and b) make room to reintroduce "the indigenous klipspringer and
grey rhebok species".

The NSPCA apparently want "humane alternatives to culling of the
goat-like creatures".

Now that the cull has started the people who care more about the welfare
of animals than humans are up in arms.

What would the cost be to relocate these tahrs to a private nature reserve?

Do you want exotic species in any nature reserve?

What does this tell us about our priorities in today's South Africa?

People have too much to eat. I've looked for Tahr in the supermarkets and
butchers - no chance. Goat makes the best curry so it's clear that people
don't need meat.

It's amazing that after being there for some 80 years or so, it's only
now that this has become an urgent case. Have they trebled their intake,
and as a result annihilated the fynbos species? Surely there must be
other mountainous ares in the W. Cape where they could be re-located if
they want so badly to remove them from Table Mountain?

Goat curry for the people on Youth Day in June? Excellent suggestion by
Peter for their use elsewhere in the thread.

To be fair they don't threaten humans. They do threaten the environment.

reserve? What for?

Nice animals, nice prisoners, bad economy, bad tax paying citizens.

Is it not perhaps a scandal that it has taken so long to act in this regard?

Thousands of animals pass through abattoirs each operating day so why
the sentimentality over these particular animals?

Why bother to relocate them? Are they a protected/endangered species?

Ag shame! They've been running free all this time looking at the "toorists"
and all, hey! It's just not nice to turn them into curry like Peter says,
hey!

Although, if it's good curry ... :-)

I'm alway happy to oblige. Biltong might be another good option...

What are the objections to games for girls? It seems to me the chief
arguments against them are (1) that
they are injurious to health; (2) that they impair the womanliness of
woman; (3) that they mar her appearance. There may be something to be
said for these contentions, but to my mind the _pros_ materially
outweigh the _cons_. - Lawn tennis for Ladies

Not endangered I believe, but the National Parks guy want to have them
annihilated, as they are "destroying the funbos on the mountain. They
even want to use sharp shooters, as the critters are not easy to find
and shoot.
