Political Prisoner:
Miguel Galvan Gutierrez

Age: 37
Occupation: Mechanical Engineer

Director of the National Center for the Development of Labor Unions (Centro
Nacional de Capacitacion Sindical y Laboral) a non-governmental
organization.
Charges: Mercenary at the service of a foreign power
Sentence: 26 years
Presiding judge: Tatiana Behar Pantaleon
Prison: Aguica, Matanzas

Review: Galvan Gutierrez is in solitary confinement in the Aguica prison in
Matanzas far away from his hometown making it very difficult for his family
to visit him.

Like many other political prisoners in Cuba, Galvan Gutierrez is confined
very near common prisoners who represent a danger to himself.

Miguel suffers persistent diarrhea stemming from a stomach illness. The
prison authorities have not allowed Miguel’s family to deliver to him the
necessary prescription drugs needed for treatment.

As an independent journalist, Miguel has spent ten years of his life
advocating for freedom of speech for the Cuban people.
As an believer in civil disobedience, Miguel has peacefully demonstrated for
human rights in Cuba.

In 1998, Miguel was run over by a truck, whose driver abandoned the scene .
The facts of the incident raised suspicion as to whether it was an accident
or a deliberate attempt on Miguel’s life. Miguel underwent five surgeries to
repair damage in his abdomen, legs and arms.

Miguel was arrested without cause several times between 1999 and 2000. He
was exiled to the province of Pinar del Rio. His family and friends filed
complaints with the district attorney, who never did anything to
investigate.

Miguel Galvan Gutierrez says he feels spiritually strong. However,
physically he does not think he can survive much longer unless there is a
drastic change and fears he will die in prison.

Prision: Aguica, provincia de Matanzas

RESENA: Galvan Gutierrez se encuentra en confinamiento solitario en una
celda, lejos de su ciudad natal para obstaculizar que sus familiares puedan
visitarlo. Como en otros casos de prisioneros politicos lo tienen ubicado
cerca de celdas habitadas por peligrosos reos comunes.

Padece de continuas diarreas a causa de trastornos estomacales; su familia
ha intentado hacerle llegar medicamentos digestivos para sus males, pero la
direccion penal se niega a entregarselas. Esta victima del castrismo ha
dedicado diez años de su vida a luchar por la libertad de expresion como
periodista independiente y por el respeto a los derechos humanos como
activista pacifico.

En 1998 fue victima de un extraño atropello por un camion que se dio a la
fuga y que lo envio al hospital donde fue sometido a cinco diferentes
cirugias en el abdomen, en la pierna izquierda y el brazo derecho. Entre
1999 y 2000, fue encarcelado en numerosas ocasiones y deportado internamente
a la provincia de Pinar del Rio.

Todos estos incidentes fueron reportados a la fiscalia distrital, pero nunca
recibio atencion. Galvan ha declarado”que se siente espiritualmente fuerte,
pero fisicamente no sera capaz de soportar por mucho mas tiempo si no ocurre
un cambio drastico, por lo que teme morir en prision”.
