164 muggings a day in London

The extent of street crime in London is revealed in new figures
showing there are 164 muggings in the capital every day.

A report by independent watchdogs shows that, although street crime
has come down from its record high levels of early 2002, it is still
higher than at any other time in recent history.

Fewer than one in 10 street robberies in London end with someone being
charged or cautioned, the worst figure in the country. And, despite
the rise in the clearup rate, the fall in numbers of street crimes
meant fewer crimes were classifiedas cleared up and fewer muggers went
to prison in 2002-3 than in 2001-2.

I've always wondered - what is this "cautioned" thing?

Does that mean they give him a warning for mugging someone?

No wonder they have such a problem.

The guy Tony Martin killed wasn't a mugger. The whole point behind the
conviction was that the Jury decided that Martin was in no immediate
danger from the burgler. If he had been, it would have been self
defence, so someone who defends himself against a mugger would be in a
different legal position.

No, I was refering to Americans in general, the same way you were
presumably refering to Brits in general. Bear in mind that this
thread started off by someone drawing attention to the number of
muggings in the capital, with direct reference to an individual
involved in an incident in a rural rather than an urban area.

Shooting isn't necessary. Kicking their heads in is quite sufficient, I did
it to one in Paris once. Unfortunately my better half dragged me away
before I could apply the heel of my Fallschirmjaeger boot to the bastard's

The muggers are all from there anyway, so they're aware of his reputation,
and they wet their kegs and run away.

As I don't mug people, and aren't stupid enough to appear to do so, I have
no fears of people defending themselves against muggers; more power to their
elbows.

As someone who has been an (attempted) victim three times, I would happily
embrace that the right to go medieval on them was formalised into statute.

Which leads me to the conclusion that if I live in London I have a 98%
chance of not being mugged, or have I got that wrong also?
