HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and Tuberculosis Prevention News Update March 7, 2003 News Briefs Global Fund Pledges $140 Million to Fight AIDS in India Agence France Presse 03.04.03 The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria pledged to give $140 million to India on Tuesday to help fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Richard G.A. Feachem, executive director of the Global Fund, said the approximate $140 million would be used over a five-year period, with $100 million to be used for AIDS projects, while $34.7 million would help treat TB. India's official estimate of four million people infected with HIV/AIDS is second only to South Africa. Feachem warned that India was quickly on its way to becoming the AIDS capital of the world and said that the number of cases of HIV/AIDS was closer to five or six million. A recent U.S. study predicted that by 2010, there would be 20-25 million Indians infected with HIV. |
