Default 1998 Dodge Intrepid fuel gage going crazy

Help, my fuel gage is going to full then to empty dinging then going to full
and back to empty again. it is not always rythmic but it is steady. is it
the sending unit or is it something in the dash? where should I start to
look.
thanks in advance
Andy

The sending unit in the tank is causing it, you can buy just the sending
unit and install it but if this vehicle has high mileage 100K you may want
to replace the entire fuel pump assembly, it is complete with everything.

Had similar with an '88 TownCar. Darned thing would read full until
it got near 1/4 tank, then the needle would swing rapidly up and down,
then settle on 1/4 tank and read correctly from there on. Just got in
the habit of keeping in my head how much fuel SHOULD be in the tank
and understanding that when the gauge read 1/4 tank, it really was 1/4
tank.

Pump and sending unit are integrated on the '98 Intrepid? That's a
change from my '88 Daytona, where they were seperate units. I guess
it makes more sense to combine them, less confusion when the shadetree
wrench-turner crawls underneath the vehicle...

Don't know about the 98-04 Intrepid but on the 93-97, the fuel
pump is changed through an access panel in the trunk. Don't
need to crawl underneath or drop the tank, and you hardly get
dirty (except for your hands smelling like gasoline).

You wont find one, there is no access panel for this year, R&R the tank to
replace it.

Injuneerin going in reverse again! I guess it costs another $1 to put an
access panel in the trunk.
