Default 4wd, but no snow tires

You really only need the chains on the rear wheels to satisfy the
legal requirements. You'll get better traction if the chains are on all
4 wheels, but the ride will beat you to death and handeling will suck.
So just put them on the rear tires, put it in 4H, and drive a little
slower.
Your tires are pretty good all season's. I probably wouldn't change
them for the few times each year that the going gets dicey up there.
When you do get around to changing them, consider the Michelin LTX M/S.
I find it to be an excellent all weather / all surface tire.

That's the main reason the CHP requires chains so the fools from the LA basin
will slow down

I was just looking. I can get chains for about $80. Not as bad as I thought
it would be. So now the big question. Cable, or chain? both are the same
price.

Those LTX M/S tires look pretty good. I have a feeling I will not be
changing the tires for a few years though. ever since I got my motorcycle, I
have been putting less then 50 miles a month on my truck now. So the tires
will not be worn out as fast. I bet I will get another year out of the
tires.

I will have to keep that in mind if I ever see someone from the LA basin.
You are right though. many people here cant drive to start with, and then
you add rain or snow, and its just a mess. then you see some 19 year old
that has been driving for three years, so he is obviously an authority on
driving in adverse weather and ends up flipping his SUV in the rain.

I personally would just go with the all seasons assuming the tread is better
than 60% on all 4 tires,

But then again, my view is tainted being a Canadian, and spending 10 out of
12 months driving in winter conditions

In all seriousness though, go for the cables, the ride is a little smoother,
and a little less hard on your rubber, and take it slow, basically drive for
the conditions and use common sense, if the pavement is dry, don't even
bother putting on the cables or chains.

Good luck to ya.

Trey... that sounds high.. 2 years ago the snow warning went up when
we were on 80 near Auburn.. we stopped at a gas station and bought a
set for about $60... go with real chains, cable suck...

Usually, you're only using chains through donner... maybe 30 or 40
miles, then you unchain...

Sorry, but I have to disagree... If you drive in 4H OR 4L (OR AWD for
that matter) you HAVE to have chains on ALL wheels, since chains
drastically change the performance of the wheels they are on. Driving
with chains in only one axle in 4X4 mode, will get very, very
interesting.
There is also the debate of putting the one set of chains in the FRONT
axle, since you need the traction mostly for steering, but since
chains are fairly inexpensive, by all means, if you need to use
chains, do it the proper way.
In my experience, the question is if you HAVE to stop and get out of
your truck to put the chains on. If you do it, putting on a second set
is just 5 minutes more of your time... You already are outside and
wet, anyway...
Do not forget to stop and adjust the chains after about 200 yards of
travel, and then check them from time to time for looseness. A loose
chain in the right (wrong) circumstances can wreck havoc in your front
system.
DO NOT GO FAST WITH THE CHAINS ON...

Being from Canada, you really don't understand how California works with this
chain deal.
It isn't up to the motorist to decide whether to chain up, the CHP decides.
There are bunches of guys waiting along the road in designated chain up areas
to chain up vehicles for around $20 for a regular car/truck.
Then they are waiting to help unchain for a "nominal" fee on the other side of
the pass
in a designated "unchain" area
A snow storm in one of the mountain passes in Kalifornia is free enterprise at
it's best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The chains range from $60-$120. I am thinking the $60 chains should do the
trick for the amount of use they will get.

Hi Trey,
There have been a number of posts regarding the type of chains to use (cable
or link chains). I'll just add that whatever you wind-up going with, make
sure you get them on as tight as you can, drive a little on 'em, and
retighten them. Alternately, you can use chain tighteners (a big "rubber
band" with some hooks) to keep the chains tight. There's nothing worse than
a chain coming loose, and making a mess of things!
