Default dodge SUV 2003 4.7 liter

Just got this in - engine sounds OK with slight hissing noise - (vacuum
leak?) but runs very rich, black smoke out tailpipe, and check engine
light on. Do these motors have history of this kind of problem? Any help
is appreciated - am considering buying this no not able to dig too far into
problem yet. thanx, ignatz

Don't know of any history of major problems. The 4.7L is a good
dependable engine. You need to read the error code using the
on-off-on-off-on key trick or stop by an AutoZone and have them read it
for free.

Hi! Got to read the codes - has 6 reading-P0131,P0133,P0171,P0442,P0455,
and P1195. 3 are for ox. sensor ckt, then 2 are for evap. system leak,
and fuel trim sys. leak (?) . This truck runs OK but gets frighteningly
bad gas mileage- about 6 mpg! Also at 30 MPH or so its seems as tranny
gets confused about what gear to be in - likely because of engine
problems? The ox. sensor has recently been changed.. As usual , thanks
for any info. ignatz

Check my last comment - the fuel trim system code was fuel trim system bank
1 lean - not leak - I guess the computer thinks there is way too much air
into bank 1 (drivers side?) so its dumping gas in - not sure why. Thanx,
ignatz

Also, how do you ID the 2002 NZC or NZD body to get the proper o2 sensor?
thanx, ignatz

Hi! Found that the new o2 sensor put in was not adequate - and when I put a
Bosch in the problem was resolved. It was the O2 sensor before the
catalytic convertor. thanx, ignatz
