Default Vents Blowing Hot Air -- 1998 Dodge Durango

Any help appreciated,
I have a 1998 Dodge Durango, 4x4, 5.9L and have an issue that the dealer blew me off over. I always seem to have warmer to hot air blowing when the vents are set to outside air. It can be 55 degrees outside and the vent air feels like 90 degrees. I brought it into the dealer and they told me all the vents are opening properly, but where is the cooler outside air????

Anyone heard of this or had a similar situation that was resolved?

Rich

Sounds like your diverter door is stuck. Not sure specifically about the
Durangos, but I believe in '98 the diverter door is operated by a stepper
motor, rather than mechanically operated like earlier vehicles. It's
possible the motor is shot.

Tom,
Thanks, is there anyway for me to check and verify. The rest of the system
appears to work, my AC is good and the heater section works, it is just the
outside vent air. The dealer tried to tell me it was caused by the heating
of the engine compartment, but when it is 57 outside I expect some cooler
air.

I don't know the specifics on the Durango, but if it's anything like on the
Rams, the motor is located on the back side of the heater/AC unit, which has
to be removed to access it. Removing this is a big job - requires the dash
to come out, the A/C to be evacuated, etc.

If you really wanted to, you could bypass the heater core, and verify that
you then get cool air blowing out the vents. That will just about prove
it's the blend air door that's not operating. Of course, there's
practically no chance that it's anything BUT a stuck/non-functioning blend
air door, so going through the process of bypassing the heater core is a
(mostly) unnecessary step.

I take it there's no change in air temperature with the temp. knob at full
cold vs. full hot? Or is there?

I do actually get variation, when in the cold position the air is not
overheated and gets hotter when moved to the heat sector, it's just that at
the coldest setting it is no where near as cool as it should be, a real pain
in the neck during warmer days.

I have a 2002 and its the same...
I thought I read once that others have the same comments.
I concluded it was a design flaw.

I researched this soon after I got my '99 D and all I found was "defect in
the blend air door" and no factory fixes. It does get worse when you are
idling for a while and the heat builds up in the engine compartment. So, I
installed a ball valve in the heater hose going "to" the heater, which I
close in the warmer weather. I didn't want to tear apart the heater box.

In article <k0ewb.19407$Wy4.17645@newsread2.news.atl.earthlin k.net>,
tNlOaSwPrAeMnMcIeN5G@earthlink.net says...

I can relate to that. My 90 C/V is all hot all the time. I have just
been too lazy to see if the cable broke or if the blend door is just
stuck.

FORTUNATELY, my caravan has a vent slider thingamajigee (technical term)
that opens vents independent of the heating system so I am not boiling
like an egg in the summer. My A/C probably has not worked in that since
1991!

Of course, the van was given to me so I have little room to squawk.
