Electronic engine management (ECM) systems detect when octane is too low
and, in most cars, automatically make adjustments to correct for it. But
these adjustments, while preventing serious knock and engine damage,
reduce power and fuel economy. The 85 octane you see at high altitudes
are meant for older cars that required a lower octane at that altitude.
If your vehicle calls for 87 octane then use that or the next step up
no matter the altitude you are at. The use of high octane fuel in a
vehicle that only calls for 87 octane is a generally a waste of money.

I myself have a 2500, 360 w/4.10 gears but used the "Superchips" brand in mine.
My mileage did increase somewhat but not as much as Bobs did. The increased
power was felt immediately as well as everything Bob described. I wish I had
done this earlier myself. Now if I can just find a set of stainless steel headers I'll
be happy...well...that is until I add the Procharger supercharger.

How difficult is this upgrade?
I have a 98 Quad Cab with a 5.9l (360 )
I have 61,000 miles and I get about 13 mpg,
My daily driving is about 4 miles of dirt road and 50 miles of highway 45-65
mph.

TIA
Kirk

Easiest and quickest upgrade I ever did, on any vehicle. Took longer to
open the package and read the instruction book than to actually do the
upgrade.
And really, the gas mileage improvement was just an added bonus.
The truck runs so much better that I would have accepted a drop of 1-2
mpg and still be happy.
