Ok, in my search for a new truck, I came across a plethora of Dodge Ram V10
trucks. I mentioned the v10 to my friend and the first thing they say is
they are a piece of c***.
How true is that? I always thought it would be cool to have a v10, but don’t
want any c***… I figured I would ask the people that actually own them and
see what they have to say about it.
Tom lawrence 2011-10-30 07:17:40
For gas mileage – they suck. But you don’t by a V10-powered truck for it’s
fuel economy, right? 🙂
I own two of them. I’ve been driving around in a Cummins-powered truck for
the past six months, though, and just got back behind the wheel of my ’95
3500 V10. Man – now I remember why I bought that truck in the first place.
Compared to the Cummins (which isn’t exactly a sloth, either), it’s
d***-near scary quick off the line. If you can keep the rear wheels hooked
up, it WILL slam the back of your head against the headrest if you stomp on
it. My 7200lb. dually 4×4 will do 0-60 in about 7.5 seconds, and the 1/4
mile in about 16.3 seconds.
As I said, I own two V10’s – the ’95 has about 103,000 on the odometer. The
’99 has under 40K (it’s an off-road truck, mainly). The ’95 truck has had
no engine problems at all (worst thing engine-related I had to replace was
the belt tensioner, and that’s routine maintenance). The ’99 did have a
cracked head, which was taken care of under warranty. Later years of the
V10 (’98-’00, mostly) saw some problems with something called head
porosity – improper castings that allowed coolant to seep into the
combustion chambers or valvetrain. Overall, this has been a rather uncommon
problem (although it certainly doesn’t seem that way to the people affected
by it, I’m sure).
C***? Hardly. Your friends are either misinformed, or have had their
trucks spanked BADLY by a Dodge V10 somewhere in the course of their travels
(especially the Ford guys… Ford V10 drivers absolutely HATE the Dodge
V10 – it makes their engine look downright gutless – which, of course, it

All I know is that I kicked the c*** out of my brother’s V10 one day with my
little 318 from 60 to 80mph. Of course I had open exhaust and his is stuffed
in its a** kinda like the guy named “Pat” around here. Don’t get me wrong,
his takes off much harder than mine but once at highway speed it isn’t any
more impressive than my 318, in fact..as I said…I beat it 60 to 80
mph…probably because of the exhaust I have. I like my Dodge good and loud,
it drowns out all the clanging & clunking of the various undercarriage
components which so often plaque these machines.

i will also agree, on a side note i have several lifelong mechanic buddies and
they have nothing bad to say about the v-10s, overall i heard mainly good
things about them everywhere else as well, this is maybe the 2nd time in many
years i ve heard anything bad about them, and as far as gas mileage is
concerned the v-10’s are no worse than a lot of v-8’s out there! i get better
mileage than my buddy in his durango with the 360 with a snowmobile trailer, he
gets like 8mpg going up north, s*** i get 10-12mpg either empty or carrying

I had a 2K 4X4 with a V10. Real quick, real strong, real thirsty. I plowed
with mine and it was fine, but again very thirsty. Only issue I had was
steering gear but that seemed to be as a result of a vendor. Have to add
that I went back to the Cummins and couldn’t be happier.

I owned a 1999 2500 Quad Cab SLT V10 for a couple of years and it was by far
my favorite vehicle I ever owned. I had a 30ft Jayco camper and we pulled
that thing up and down interstate 75 and never knew it was back there. It
was very responsive and actually funner drive than a couple of smaller
sportier trucks I have owned. I got rid of it when we sold our camper and
gas prices shot through the roof. The V10 only gets about 10 mpg, whether
you are pulling a huge trailer or not.
I now own a 1998 1500 Quad Cab Laramie… still a nice truck but nothing
like my V10
Diskman_1 2011-10-30 07:18:54
I owned a 1998 Dodge V10 2500 4×4 for about 2 years. It had the
cracked heads syndrome so it kept shearing the rocker stud bolts off
due to coolant in the oil. I was finally able to trade it in and go
with a used F-150 5.0L and it was the BEST deal I ever did. I have
owned many Dodge trucks and vehicles (Still own a 2002 Intrepid). I
show the new F-150 no mercy. Tow my boat and camper combo all over
the countryside this summer. Changed the fluids regularly and it just
drives great. Sorry, but I am now a Ford convert.
Just my .02
Mopar440 2011-10-30 07:19:04
Just wait till you have to have the headgaskets changed cause of leaking oil.
With the “cabforeward” design, the cylinder heads can’t come off with the
engine in the truck.
That should keep you “converted”
Oh, and it’s a REAL common problem
Enjoy that Ford

Yeah, right, whatever you want to believe
I had a friend with a 1965 full size Pontiac 389 who claimed it accelerated
faster from 90 to 110 than a 396/350hp Chevelle.
I often wondered how these guys figure this out.
Is it, let’s accelerate from 10 to 30 mph and we’ll see who’s ahead?
Then 20 to 40mph and see who’s ahead?
then 30 to 50mph and see who’s ahead?
I can see where these people apparently have a whole lot of time on their
You know I once raced a 396 Chevelle and beat him by 2 ten thousandths to 115.
That was the margin of victory at the finish line at the drag strip

I’ve had a ’95 2500 V-10 from new. It has 87,000 miles on it and I’ve had
NO engine (or transmission) problems- bad brakes, bad fuel pump, but good
engine. I bought it to pull a very heavy 5th wheel and it does that very
well (the trailer was custom built and was supposed to come it at 13k but
actually weighs 16k down the road). I had no choice but overload the truck
to pull it (couldn’t be buying another truck at that point). Mine is a 4×4,
automatic with a 3.54 non-slip. I average 11 -12 mpg in daily driving, but
have gotten up to 17 on the highway under good conditions. My worst towing
mileage was 6.54 pulling the fiver through the Western Maryland and West
Virginia mountains. Best was 8.54 in more level going. I could do better,
but I like to keep up with the traffic even with the trailer. When I picked
up the trailer at the factory in MO I was going 70 pulling it before I
realized it. The V-10 is a ticket magnet because it is so smooth and quiet.
50 feels like 25-30 so I have a lot of trouble in town holding it down.
The poor V-10 gas mileage story is a bad rap. Compare the V-10 to a Ford
460 or a GM 454 mileage (or even a GM 350- my son’s 1-ton GMC with a 350 and
a 4.56 rear gets 8mpg max).
The only thing that has outpulled me my brother’s 6-speed Cummins.

That’s true, Ford and Chevy make big engines too. and hey, I’m getting 10-11
now, so 11-12 would be a nice improvement. I am also looking at the Cummins
Trucks. They are much more rare, or should I say, no one is selling theirs.
I would prefer the Cummins myself but if I can find a v10 for cheap, it
might be a good alternate.
Roy 2011-10-30 07:19:28
I’ve a 2K Cummins for sale 2500 4X4 with most of the toy’s 4:10 ls in the
rear. It ain’t cheap.
Denny 2011-10-30 07:19:40
If I remember right, I offered $6,999.99 and a few assorted spiffs and you
didn’t even acknowledge my offer. You must not want to sell it very bad……
Mopar440 2011-10-30 07:19:54
Well, d***, I must have missed that “offer”
I’d go $5995.00. I’m really not interested in what’s in the “toy chest” out
You haven’t been plowing “bare assed” have you??????????
A dyslexic man walks into a bra.
Denny 2011-10-30 07:19:56
Nope. Those guys with the fancy leather (heated??) seats can do that. I like
to jump out and take a p*** every now and then and I really wouldn’t like
freezing my nuts off doing it. The more I think about it, that style of
plowing is more of an East coast habit than a mid west one.
Roy 2011-10-30 07:20:19
It must be a b**** trying to take a leak all done up in that bunny suit.
Roy 2011-10-30 07:20:20
Wait a sec, You never mentioned any “assorted spiffs” W** is that? Bunny speak??
Denny 2011-10-30 07:20:24
Sure we did. T-Bone and me was gonna teach your dog to run the snowblower
for one and there was a few others that slip whats left of my mind..
Mike simmons 2011-10-30 10:48:06
Ahem! And what IS wrong with heated leather seats?…. hmmmmm?
Denny 2011-10-30 10:48:11
Not a thing, as long as it’s in a T&C or 300M, ect….
REAL trucks don’t have heated, leather seats. It just ain’t right…..
Diskman_1 2011-10-30 10:48:30
Eh? I can practically hide behind the engine in my F-150. I already
replaced the valve cover gaskets no problem and there appeared to be
ample room to remove the heads if need be. Or was that a reference to
the pain-in-the-a** V10 that IS tucked waaayy into the cab. Not
interested in the new Ferds. I actually like the 1990. Very solid.

Really, we were both more than generous in our offers and he didn’t even
acknowledge that they even existed.
If at first you don’t succeed, you’re not cut out for skydiving
Cbhvac 2011-10-30 10:49:53
Just for giggles and grins, we went to a Ford dealer today to look at the
New Improved F-150….
Ok..the dash is cool.
The F250 and 350…..W**??? $55,000 for gasser with no leather???
Now that the Firebird and Camaro are gone, I noticed that there was a HUGE
difference in the Mustangs…two 40th anniversary models, identical…ones
30, and the others 41…I could see it if they had leather and the works on
the other..but if a Mach stereo adds that much to one…fuckit…waiting on
the GTO to return.
Roy 2011-10-30 10:49:55
You know that as soon as you mention leather to Red, he reach’s for “the machine”
At 41 or so you could put yourself into a low mileage Z06
