Surf Perch Fishing (perch sea)
I'm living temporarily in Sandpoint, ID, but my permanent residence is
on the Oregon coast. The best resource I've found is John Shewey's "NW
Flyfishing: Trout and Beyond" (http://tinyurl.com/9q75r).
Pink shrimp patterns work well. The best time to go is generally late
spring to early summer, but people hook into perch all year around.
The best places I've found to fish for surfperch are where coastal
streams dump into the sea and also where the current has scoured out
mini-lagoons. If you go to a beach at low tide (I live near the Oregon
Dunes, which is basically a 40-mile beach), make note of these lagoons
or pools. When the tide rises, they are good holding places for
surfperch.
Also, being left handed is a definite advantage if you are standing
sideways to the surf and casting into the stiff, prevailing summertime
northwestern winds on the west coast.
It's overkill, but I fish a 10 weight just because it's my saltwater
rig and it has a shooting head. Surfperch around here are more a
6-weight category fish.
Flyfishing for surfperch is definitely an undiscovered opportunity. In
six years of almost daily trips to the beach (mostly to walk the dogs,
sometimes to fish), I've never seen another flyfisherman.
