Default Should I buy A New Fishin' Pole? (fly reel rod)

Going to the Fly Show this weekend with a moderate but limited amount
of funds available should I invest in:

1. Many more prime hackle necks

2. Tons of miscellaneous fishing stuff

3. A new Scott, Powell, Winston or other fly rod

4. A new Teton reel

5. A complete set of fly lines for all my current reels (only 8 or 9)

6. A new pontoon boat for mild white water (I've got two U-Boats for
sale)

7. Tons of miscellaneous fly tying stuff

8. Downpayment for a fly fishing vacation someplace to be named later

9. Send the whole check down to Wally and have him pick something nice

?????

Vote soon, vote often, advice needed ASAP!

Default Just my 2cents (rod tarpon trout)

It seems to me that our culture is built on the idea, "He who dies with the
most toys, wins." If that really suits an individual than fine, I won't
argue. But I've found that "He who spends the most time playing with his
toys, wins," fits me better.

I used to hunt 89 days out of a 91 day duck season ( never opening day or
Christmas ) with a single Browning over and under, and the last few years
I've gradually built up to about 5 straight months of fishing each summer,
almost always with the same rod. Of course, the time I have spent
"playing" has come at a very real cost in "stuff," for instance my truck has
231,000 miles on it, only the born wealthy can have lots of stuff AND lots
of time, but I have no regrets about "stuff I could have owned." ... I DO
regret how fast the time is disappearing.

No, you can't fish for tarpon and trout with the same rod, but duplication
of function, just "to buy" is an error, imho. I love "cool stuff" but I see
so many people in our culture collecting, but seldom using, their stuff and
I'd suggest trying the opposite approach.

I own way too much FFishing crap, accumulated over the years, and I think
it is very significant that last year I gave away 3 rods. I've also thrown
away lots of tying "stuff" that I never used, lately. It's important to
understand that this is because I'm fishing MORE ... not because I'm
fishing less.

Treat yourself to some TIME ....money represents the time you used making
it, reverse that and spend some to get some time back

I vote for #8

Do you have any Jungle Cock hackles? I'll bet that the rods, reels and
lines you already have or fine. But without Jungle cock hackles, what's
the point?

I don't own a single Jungle Cock. Do you use those to make trout
streamers? If so I don't need any because trout don't take streamers.

It's OK. British variant spelling, I'm thinking. They do things
differently over there.

Salmon flies (atlantic). Of course the fish, as we all know, will
actually take any old thing, so long as you drive it right, but there's
something about flies like Curry's Red Shrimp ...

http://www.skj-lf.dk/fluestikken/Curryshrimp.htm

(sorry it's in german or whatever, but it's the best picture I could
find of this ulster fly)(the jungle cock is that odd looking one at the
top)

.... which make a fly *satisfying* in the same way that an absurdly good
rod or reel (equally unnecessary) is satisfying.

(Ps - my spelling of 'are' as 'or', although a mistake, faithfully
reproduces my dialect)

Didn't say he was, just that he has a right funny way of spelling! :-)

Lazarus, I seem to recall you are in the greater London area. Is there any
trout fishing to be had in late March in your neighborhood?
