I want to fish the Bow a couple weeks this summer, maybe the Crowsnest.

I haven't been to Canada since "the good old days" when one simply waved at
the friendly border guards, going both directions.

What do I need to plan on in the way of IDs and "papers" to get into Canada
and back into Bushland these days? I usually have a shotgun with me,
should I leave it behind? will it cause a hassle?

Driver's license (photo id) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate
or passport). I typically travel with a driver's license and birth
certificate. Leave the shotgun behind, you won't be able to bring it in.
Also, leave the bear spray behind too.

Thanks Tim .... I only take the gun because I have some dog trainer friends
around Montana and sometimes take a day or two to work dogs with them for
old times sake .... I'll borrow one if I need to. I've never carried bear
spray.

It's a long ( and somewhat private) story but I don't have a birth
certificate and may have trouble getting a copy ... thus my early start on
the project. I was told a passport was needed and for that I needed to get
the birth certificate, too. I may not actually exist ... not sure yet <G>

If you have been recognized by ROFFians, you probably shouldn't exist, but
you should have been born!

Good luck in your endeavor to persevere!

A young woman I danced with in St. Johns, Newfoundland lo these many years
ago used it as a cologne.....um.....or should have, anyway.

I think it's one of those import tariff thingies.

No, it isn't but self-defense spray for use against humans
is illegal. If you get to a border crossing and you encounter
a border guard with an IQ bigger than his shoe size (highly
unlikely on *either* side of the border) you might try to
explain Canadian law to them. We were able to get our bear
spray through once in five visits before we just gave up
and quit arguing with them.

Larry-

If you have trouble digging up a birth certificate, and have used up all
your options, you might want to give www.vitalcheck.com a try.

Good Luck

You can always buy it after you cross the border. Its a better
price than you pay in the States too. (Although price is probably not
the best way to judge bear spray).

We'll probably be going to Alberta in August and will definitely have
a can (or two) on our persons.

No, it isn't illegal, you just can't bring it into the country. At
least, the border guards will ask you if you have it. I am not sure of
the reason/ I think it is because it has been used in assaults in the
past, and purchase is regulated. When you buy it in Canada you have to
sign some kind of assurance document saying that it soley for backwoods
use.
