THAMES TO HUMBER REPORT
A reply from a contact that fished Wales the other week about undersize
fish. Fisheries officers approached him and his friend about his catch.
However he had no undersize fish, but was treated with respect and
friendliness and in fact were very helpful and knowledgeable.
Well the weather has stirred the water up now, however no one has told the
fish. The general fishing has carried on from its slow down last week.. One
hot spot is that now the crab has started to come back, the smoothounds have
turned up on mass around the Chapel St Leonard's to Mablethorpe stretch. In
a match at Moggs Eye, local top match man their Tony Burman won with I think
7 smoothies for 37lb, second and third place had 36 and 32lb, all in four
hours. Sounds very good to me, well worth a drive from anywhere in our
region, all in all if you have never caught a smoothie from the beach you
have no idea what you have been missing, get up there.
Some bass, roker and smoothounds for Southend boats, less weed at times than
of recent weeks. Ragworm, crab and squid are pulling in most of the fish.
Scad, mackerel, garfish, bass and mullet are being caught in varying numbers
from Southend Pier. Alexander Angling top match man Terry Knott is the man
in the know, give him a buzz on 01702 437066. The rougher weather has
improved the shore fishing on Southend's beaches at night. A few more eels
and the odd better bass can be expected. A recent local match with 20
anglers at Thorpe Bay was won by Dave Day with a bass and an eel for 4lb 8
1/2oz. Stewart Tanner came a close second with 7 eels and a flounder for 4lb
6oz. Sole fishing up the Grays end stays a bit patchy with not to many fish
being landed, a few flounders and the odd bass.
I mentioned that a 27lb smoothound was caught last week from Lady Lucy, well
the lucky man was Dell Leash from Scotland, also caught were 24 other
smoothies over 9lb of which 5 were over 20lb. This week's fish for the
Crouch boats included smoothounds to 18lb, bass to 4lb and roker to 8lb,
keeping up the excellent fishing from this area. Shore anglers can expect
some bass to 7lb on ragworm also some eels will also be close to the shore
where the bass will be feeding. The Bradwell charter fleet have been
concentrating on the smoothounds to the extent that other fish have almost
been ignored, such is the quality of the smoothound fishing at the moment.
Fish up to 24lb have been recorded, in the deeper water hermit crab is the
best bait but in the shallow water normal crab will work as well. Inshore
more bass and eels feature in the catches with rag being the better bait and
still the chance of a stingray. Trips out from here with John Rawle on the
Kingfisher can be booked on 01621 776445.
John Easie tells me that the fishing here has stayed slow with the best
spots by the groynes for the odd flounder, eel, bass and sole on rag and
squid for bait. Try daybreak before the punters get there and float some
ragworm around the groynes for a decent bass. To find out where phone Brian
on 01255 425992. Just up the road at Walton, in fact at Hopkins beach on the
Naze a report of two good bass falling to Mustifa Hamit, who has reported to
have had two bass to 8lb 8oz on mackerel. Elsewhere not to much being caught
but plenty of small bass to keep anglers busy at least. Close to the shore
on Walton Pier some soles are being caught, most of these smaller fish are
being taken on ragworm. Terry Woodrow has found some roker and stingrays for
the boat anglers.
East Lane anglers for a few soles, but the rivers are producing most of the
fish with bass featuring most of all on ragworm. Dave Brown at Breakaways on
01473 741393 has the local news. The river Orwell for some flounders, small
bass and eels, Thorpeness Point appears to be the top spot from the Suffolk
coast for the chance of the best bass, Sizewell for soles again not many
being caught. The south pier at Lowestoft produced a 8lb 8oz bass, also a
few mackerel, beaches all along this region are slow with just the odd bass,
flounder, sole and eel. I am told that the water is dirty and needs to clear
up, so these fish round here don't like dirty water caused by the windy
weather.
North Norfolk beaches such as Cley to Weybourne are producing only a few
mackerel however if you persist with spinners or lures I am sure you will
tempt some bass out. Overstrand is always well worth a try for a chance of
bigger bass. Top fish fell again from Cromer Pier with an 8lb bass, caught
on live joey macki. A few mullet are also now being caught on mackerel flesh
and bread. Martin Steward has all the news on 01263 513676 at Marine Sports.
From the boats around the Humber, the tope have become a bit patchy, head of
Mablethorpe and I am sure you will find some smoothounds close to the shore
as they are being caught from the beaches there. So Mablethorpe, Moggs Eye
and Chapel St Leonard's are the top spots in our region with smoothounds at
all states of the tide and from about 40 yards out, you must have crab. I am
told that the Estuary marks on the Humber are somewhat quiet now for fish
and humans, I wonder why. Phone a very happy Bob Tarvet at Cleethorpes
Angling on 0
