Got out today for that first time, in a few weeks, to fish. I headed over to Stev's
Creek. It's a beautiful little stream relatively close to Upper Creek, with much the same topography: Large boulders, fast riffles, and fairly deep plunge pools. I didn't get out quite as early as I had intended to, but I apparently beat the campers out of bed, thankfully. I hit the water about 9:00AM, and it was beginnin' to get hot already. I figured that the fish would be holdin' down deep in the pools, so I tied on a #10 Joe's Hopper with a hare's ear dropper about 16 inches below the bend in the hook. I'm not much of a nymph fisherman, so I use a *bobber* fly as an indicator. If the fish had been hittin' the dropper, I might have tried goin' commando with a nymph only. I fished this setup for about thirty minutes without a hookup. I did have a few strikes at the dry, but they were little'ums. I finally decided to go with the hopper alone. First cast I hooked-up with a nice Brown. Next was a foul hooked 'bow. Then I hooked up with a very nice horny-head, and it was released the same as the trout. Not much to report after that. I spook numerous fish, missed as many strikes, and as the day wore in and the temp rose to about 95 or so, the fishin' turned to wadin' while castin' a fly. Thought the temp was high, I was fairly cool in the water, until I began the hike out. To get to the trail one must climb a ridge side, at which point one comes to a loverly meadow of poison ivy/sumac (?). From there it's all downhill, 'till ya level off and fight your way thru the mountain laurels. Other than that, it's a wonderful stroll back to the truck. I was drippin' wet when I got back, but otherwise unshaved. Mark --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
