Default 1997 expedition cooling problem

1997 ford expedition 4.6L . what can be the problem with a cooling system
that runs normal - then all of a sudden - the temperature guage goes
immedially to hot. check engine light goes on - oil light goes on - engine
start running very bad (rough). immedially shutting it off and let it sit
for about 3-4 minutes - restarting it every thing goes back normal . the
coolant recovery tank loose about a quart of coolant. strange also, no
heat is coming out heat vents.changed thermostat and flush system - it
still does it. could it be water pump ? or other problem. any
suggestions....

Nobody likes to bear bad news. Time to get the the engine checked for head
gasket problems.

i changed thermostat 2x's just in case i brought bad one (test out okay).
i've taken the water pump off -inspected it ( no leaks at weep hole;no
noise;feels tight as to no excessive play i reinstall water pump -
hoping for no leaks!! why should i suspect head gaskets- no steaming from
tail pipe;no water in oil;no oil in radiator;vehicle runs with no missing
or skipping when temperature is normal - runs terrible only when over
heating. how about clutch fan - ????
