Default 1993 ford escort lx sw check engine light and brake light won't go off


My niece gave me this car!! The check engine light and the brake light stay
on constantly. She said her dad put another enogine in it and the check
engine light has been on ever since. Also, when the car is first started
up it is reving very fast. Any ideas?
