Default 2003 Exp - O/D Blinking

Hi All,

Last night I was driving and thought I smelled something burning for a
second or two then it went away. Thought it might be coming from outside
the vehicle. Now my O/D light is blinking constantly and the car is
shifting a little funny. Not shifting bad, but definitely different... Any
thoughts? I am going to get under the vehicle and check the wiring to the
vehicle speed sensor today as well as check the wiring to look for anything
noticeable. Haven't gotten the codes checked out yet, but will take by
Autozone today to see if they can read the codes for me.

The blinking O/D light indicates a transmission problem. This is
covered in the owners guide. THe guide says something like:

"Overdrive off: Illuminates when the overdrive function of the
transmission has been turned off, refer to the Driving chapter. If the
light flashes steadily or does not illuminate, have the transmission
serviced soon, or damage may occur."

Exactly what vehicle do you have. A 2003 Exp could be an EXPlorer or
an EXPedition. Potentially different transmisisons and a different set
of failures. Is it 2WD or 4WD? Which engine?

Join the Expediton Owners Mailing List and ask that group. See
<http://mail.xpog.com/mailman/listinfo/expedition>.

My suggestion is to have the codes read as soon as possible. It might be an
easily corrected problem, but letting it go could lead to larger problems
later on. Ed

I would suggest not driving until you can have the codes read...

....been there, done that, and bought a 3K t-shirt!

Took it to the dealer and found out I had a P1783 code - Trans Over Temp
Condition. Service advisor stated it was a solenoid issue causing the over
temp condition. All fixed now... Driving real nice as of picking it up
early evening.

This is what my service order states:

"ROADTEST EECTEST CODE P1783 TRANS OVER TEMP REPLACE MAINCONT CONNECTOR FOR
CODE P1783 ROADTEST AFTER REPAIRS"

QTY PART # DESC
1 F8AZ-7G276-BA CONNECTOR $32.47
$32.47
14 XT-5-QM FLUID - TRANSM 4.75
66.50

LABOR
338.95

TOTAL
$437.92

That bliniing light is telling you there is trouble with the transmission.
Technically, the light is telling you the transmission THINKS it is having
trouble. The trouble may be real, or not. I would proceed as if there is
trouble until you determine without reservation that there is no trouble.
