Default Will abandonware survive?

There something that worries me: the only sites that seem to keep going
are Abandonia and a few paid abandonware sites where you have to pay a
fee for "unlimited" downloading. Underdogs seems to be going down,
Frenchkiss (and it was a great abandonware site) is dead. I really
prefer HOTU over Abandonia because they have far more games in there,
including A Bridge Too Far. But for how long will these abandonware
sites survive? What if they not? Then all these old games will
disappear too, except for a few cd's or floppies for sale in e-Bay.
Imagine The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, disappearing when they
finally make it freeware. And imagine what would be of many great games
such as Railroad Tycoon? Many of these great games I knew only by
visiting abandonware sites.

Does you have the capability to download the 35GB or so of Underdogs?
It's fast at the moment - I bet you could do it inside a month.

I've been thinking about asking her to send me a hard disk with everything
from the site on it, but it exceeds my financial abilities... but if I could
afford it, I'd do it for sure.

Well, if anyone has a whole bunch of bandwidth and would like to
download the-underdogs _en grosse_, email me off-list and I'll help you
out with a script to get past the download CAPTCHA. It's very easy.

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks for the suggestion... I'll keep it in mind if I manage to get some
cash to get a few months of flat-rate.
Though, from what I've seen, HOTU is limited on their side, I've been
getting 16K max, regardless if I did it on my 384k ADSL, or the T1 line at
the university.

If anyone has a way to leech the whole HOTU archive let me know - as I would
be very interested in providing some sort of mirror. I have the vast
majority of the games always (I went through one by one filling the gaps in
my collection a year or two ago). So I don't need to completely catch up on
everything...

There's always IRC and Usenet binaries for abandonware if not abandonware
http.
