Default Customising DM Genie

Hi all,

I am considering purchasing DM Genie, as I note it states that it is
customisable. Can anyone tell me if it is sufficiently customisable to
essentially run a 2nd Ed D&D campaign on it? If so, would it involve a
lot of computer or programing knowledge to do so? I understand that I
would have to reverse the combat maths of course.

Thank you

Lindsay

Since DMgenie is d20 based, I don't think it can be done.

It is simply breathtaking to watch the glee and abandon with which
the liberal media and the Angry Left have been attempting to turn
our military victory in Iraq into a second Vietnam quagmire. Too bad
for them, it's failing.

You should search the DM Genie forums for "2e", "2ed", and "2nd" and see what you find.
I know there's been some talk previously about building data files for 2nd Ed, but it
would be a fair amount of work. Could it be done without programming? I would say
that about 80% of it would be editing data files and inputting information. The other
20% might involve writing some VBscript, but that would be optional. For example,
proficiencies in 2nd Ed might allow a PC to do something (some specific action) that
requires dice rolling. It would be nice if that information could be entered in DM Genie
so it could do that work automatically.

Your more important aspect is the design: what has to change and how would you
implement it? For example, feats in DM Genie are scriptable and can automatically react
when you tell the party to "rest" for either 8 hours or 24 hours. So a feat would make
sense for something that could be used "once per day". Skills in DM Genie can be
double-clicked to activate the skill, but that simply makes a d20 roll and nothing else,
and they aren't scriptable at all.

Search the forums and see if you can find anything there first...

I have to admit, though, that the level of support from the developer, Janik, has dropped
significantly in the last year or so. Most of the support now comes from the community.

You may also want to consider a system-agnostic tool that allows you to build
everything from scratch. I've recently gotten involved in MapTool (from rptools.net) and
its macro facility has moved ahead leaps and bounds in the last few months. It doesn't
do everything that DM Genie does, but you don't need a lot of that anyway. However,
MapTool will *absolutely* require scripting -- unless someone else over there has
already done the work for 2nd Ed. Again: search their forums as well as look around.

I hate to keep saying, "search the forums", but I don't keep up with 2nd Ed stuff any
more.

Ciao!

Another thing you might want to check out is the Core Rules software and expansion that TSR/WotC released for 2nd Edition. It
is out of print but still obtainable (Ebay). If you are interested, drop me an email; I could help you out.
