Default Greyhawk city survey, on the river or off

Trying to find a consensus on where to place some cities. Comparing
Darlene map placement you could justifiably claim many cities are 30
miles or more from a river yet are near enough to say that they were
meant to be.

Shiboleth, on the river or off the river? The LGJ Keoland article places
WAY off the river. Paizo wall map puts it on.

Highfolk town, on the river or off the river? Marklands regional map has
it well off. Paizo wall map has it on.

Longspear, on the river or off the river? It's description lays it "in
the hills", also see the LGJ Keoland map where it is off. Paizo wall map
has it on.

Westkeep, on the river or off the river? See LGJ Keoland map again , has
it off . . . Paizo wall map has it on.

Care to vote?

IIRC, EGG addressed the Darlene map this in one of his Dragon articles, shortly after the
'83 box came out.

He stated something to the effect of "if the city is in the same hex as a river, assume that
it's actually on the river."

I'm assuming that all the sources you listed were unaware of or had forgotten that errata,
but it seems the Paizo crew remembered.

on the river, in all your cases. there's not much point in being
close-but-inconveniently-not-actually-on a river. --

Historically almost all (if not all) large cities are on a river.

With the exceptions tending to be either on a lake or in a natural sea
port.

The sea ports need rivers too in order to get fresh water.

Can't really be otherwise. Cities form around busy trade junctions,
trade forms around path of least resistance, and large rivers flattening out
near the sea are the ultimate in both the need for junctions and giving low
resistance to movement.

Inland cities can form around the main drainage channel for large and
rich agricultural basins, lake or river confluence junctions, or near an
overland shortcut between rivers running to different coasts. Cities built
around strong overland trade tend to die off, as the city itself adds
resistance to the route.

The odd lord builds a city for its equidistant nature within his
empire's boundaries. Such places are cold and heartless drains on the state
coffers.

Atlanta was built at a major railroad junction.

They can also make do with multiple streams or decent groundwater.
