Wow...I saw that screen in the beginning where it says "Best played on
Intel's HT cpus". But this is ridiculous. The game should run good on
both Intel and AMD cpus. FYI, SSE is an Intel instruction set...which
is also in many newer AMD cpus for compatibility.
But AoE devs shouldn't be limiting hardware support like this.

They don't and they didn't.
I have just a lowly AMD 1800XP with Radeon 9000 AIW graphics

and I get the error
"DirectX 9.0c or higher is required to run Age of Empires III"
when in fact I have DX9c installed, and when I click "attempt to run" it is
just fine at max res.

The SSE thing is just another software error message of the "no keyboard
found - press any key to continue" variety, and if you follow through the
link I gave you should get to
http://www.geocities.com/uart0/k7som.html
which will provide a fix for the problem.

Mustn't expect a demo to be perfect...

Yeah, but what I am trying to say is that you shouldn't be getting
that error just because you have an AMD. I have an Intel HT processor
and I had absolutely no problem and no errors when running the game. A
non-technical person might get frustrated with that error.

Of late, I've seen a lot of games which are "made for" a particular
card manufacturer. Like Half Life 2....its an ATI game. Runs best on
ATI cards. In fact, it doesn't even run in DX9 mode on Nvidia cards.
You have to go into a config file and change some settings to force it
to run on nvidia. Or Doom 3, which is an nvidia game. ATI cards run
it, but it plays much much better on nvidia due to the OGL support in
those cards.

Seems like a lot of card branding going on in games today. So I
thought maybe Intel was trying to do some processor branding
