Yes, but before I uninstalled I copied the 'Battlefield 2' directory
from the C:\Documents and Settings\{profile}... etc..(can't remember
the full path...but look obviously for 'Battlefield 2' directories)
as a backup. It allows you to keep the profiles intact after
uninstall, but I never trusted it would!

Seems using the Original CD and 1.3 full patch (460mb+) fixes the
problem. I definately have it working, but most of the servers are now
a patch behind so it's still a while before everyone catches up...and
I'm back online.

I think I am not the only one who has noticed that PC games in general are
much more "buggy" now then they were just a few years back, even if much
less games are being released per year, allowing the publishers to focus
their time on projects much longer and with more manpower. I like the new
patch, and have had no problems with it, however I am quite sure if you pull
the newsgroup for UT2004 right after a patch, there would be much less
"whining like little kids" and thanking the publisher for new (FREE) content
and better game-play. Half-Life 2 as well suffered much less problems then
BF2 out of the box, and it's patches did not cause the game to become MORE
unstable it many instances. Oh, and "patches" for patches is a little
strange.

At this point in BF2's age the patches should not be fixing BIG problems
that the game shipped with, but improving compatibility with new hardware
and to improve the game's overall performance. I remember when a new patch
would cause a game to run faster and look better, now your lucky if the
patch does crash while your trying to install it.

Also, I think Epic or Sierra would have fixed the "red bug" after a year of
the game being out. I have Far Cry, have not reinstalled it on my current
PC, but I am guessing if I installed it today I would not suffer one crash
on the un-updated version, and less the 2-3 minute load time per map.

I find BF2 is a better game then the three I mentioned above, and I have
enjoyed many more hours playing it. But to say that EA put out a product
that is as stable and as well supported as the other three is impossible.

"Better yet, why don't I let you visit both places briefly, then you can
make your decision. Which do you choose to see first, Heaven or Hell?"

Bill played with his pocket protector for a moment, then looked back at God
and said, "I think I'll try Hell first." So, with a flash of lightning and a
cloud of smoke, Bill Gates went to Hell.

When he materialized in Hell, Bill looked around. It was beautiful and
clean, a bit warm, with sandy beaches and tall mountains, clear skies,
pristine water, and beautiful women frolicking about. A smile came across
Bill's face as he took in a deep breath of the clean air. "This is great,"
he thought, "if this is Hell, I can't wait to see heaven."

Within seconds of his thought, another flash of lightning and a cloud of
smoke appeared, and Bill was off to Heaven. Heaven was a place high above
the clouds, where angels were drifting about playing their harps and singing
in a beautiful chorus. It was a very nice place, Bill thought, but not as
enticing as Hell.

Bill looked up, yelled for God, told him his decision and was sent to Hell
for eternity.

Time passed, and God decided to check on the late billionaire to see how he
was progressing in Hell. When he got there, he found Bill Gates shackled to
a wall in a dark cave amid bone thin men and tongues of fire, being burned
and tortured by demons.

"So, how is everything going?" God asked.

Bill responded with a cracking voice filled with anguish and disappointment,
"This is awful! It's nothing like the Hell I visited the first time!! I
can't believe this is happening! What happened to the other place...with the
beaches and the mountains and the beautiful women?"

"That was the demo," replied God.
