There have been plenty of new ideas for games. What was there like
"Battlefield 1942" before that came out? If you say "Combat" you
deserve a slap.

And sometimes just implementing an old game idea onto new technology
can make the game completely different. The original GTA (which came
out in 1998, btw... not anywhere close to TLOZ) was nowhere near as fun
as the 3D version.

Battlefield 1942 is based on Codename Eagle. (Which is also released as
a mod for BF1942).

True, true, I had forgotten about that. Still, it doesn't prove CMR's
general assertion, only that I was specifically wrong in this instance.
The multiplayer-sandbox-FPS is definitely a type of game that only
came about recently, and wasn't based on some 1980s Atari idea.

And that's because the "ancient" machine were not capable to showing
decent FPS-style graphics. I mean, run Wolfenstein again. And that were
the 90's. (Of course: (disclaimer to prefend low-life whiners to start
an useless discussion) Wolfenstein ruled! No offence to the game, but a
general example! ).

There may be lots of elements "stolen" from ancient games, but CMR's
conclusion is a bit (as we call it) "kort door de bocht"....

I believe Tribes 1 came out before BF, and that had the closest matching
gameplay. Vehicles, aircraft, ground troops, radio commands, chaotic
team-based gameplay, ctf, capture and hold, etc. Tribes was big. It
wasn't WW2, but everything else is essentially the same. Base raping in
Tribes was a whole different game... once they setup in your base, you
pretty much had to sleep on the couch for a while. Memories. ~.

Tribes was further influenced by Marathon and Terra Nova, but really the
elements that we appreciate in BF started in Tribes.
