Default new patch being tested in the Training room...

in the Forums...Lighthouse has said that they are testing mostly back
end stuff, so really no one should see any difference in game play
but.....2 of the reasons for this is that they are moving the game to
be started via the NCSoft Launcher AND to be able to differentiate
accounts (existing/new/trial/free) so that they can eventually put
more limits on the trial/free accounts to cut down further on spam and
such

I'm not a particular fan of the Launcher but anything to cut down on
spam is a step in the right direction.

One nice thing about the launcher is that if you set it to run in the
background, it can do any incremental patching automatically... Makes it
nice to not have to sit and wait while staring at the progress bar when a
new patch or issue update hits.

One crap thing about the launcher is that if everyone is hitting it,
for an update or whatever, you can't launch the game *even if you're
already patched up to date.* OTOH, if you bypass the launcher, you can
hop right in.

If they're going to remove that ability...well, I can't say I'll quit
the game over it, but I will be annoyed.

One bad thing about the launcher is that it bogs the system down when
patching (quicker to quit after the patch begins, then restart for faster
patching) and it chews memory up like it's going out of style.

"Bypass the Launcher"? Can you explain this a bit?

You can (currently) make a shortcut that makes the City of Heroes
application launch directly, bypassing the need for the launcher. You
still have to run the launcher when there's a patch, though. Google
"project coh" to find how.

Here ya go..

Default "target" line: "C:\Games\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
Edited "target" line: "C:\Games\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project
coh

Your "Target" line should show the path to the game, then it changes from
pointing at the updater to the CoH EXE, then add the "-project coh" at the
end (remove quotes) and save.

Double click on your CoH icon and log in!

Yep, it works great. Fabulous to have for those times when the updater is
jammed and you can't get past the "checking for updates" step.

As noted, it will only work when you have the latest patch. But I have it
in the tray next to the regular CoB icon and find myself using it at least
once a month.
