Default Very Slow, Questions

I am running an E-Machine Celeron 2.8, 768m RAM, Windows XP Home, I have a
Comcast Cable modem and DSLreports and 2Wire broadband Meter test report
3.4 - 4.2 mbps speed. The clincher is I am using a PNY 128mb NVidia G-Force
FX PCI Video Card.

The computer was purchased on a really good deal so I didnt check to see if
it had AGP and it was too late when I opened it up and foudn it didnt.

Is my game going to run that much slower with a PCI video card over a AGP
video card?

I have two friends I was trying to play via internet they where telling me
the game was slow when they play me but fast when they play others? Can
this be my system?

Thanks for the help.

Nope. PCI vs AGP really doesn't make that much of a huge difference. It'll be
noticeable, certainly, but the effect will probably be mostly ignoreable; you
should have no trouble running in 1024x768. The game does slow down to the
lowest common denominator in multiplayer but there are other factors. If you
have AI players, that can have a huge effect. You can benchmark your system; you
should aim to have 20 frames per second when playing a 1 on 1 skirmish game.
Tune the settings to achieve this and your friends should no longer blame you
for any speed issues (to see your FPS in generals, use a tool like
www.fraps.com)

Yeah, I have the exact problem after upgrading from w2k to wxp, downgrade to
w2k if you can, it's faster. Otherwise, try upgrading to directx9b,
downgrading ur nvidia drivers if u already updated them to the newest
version, and turn off ur flashy gui for wxp and that should give u some
extra fps.

Is that PCI Express? if so, wow, I want one!!

1. If you consider downgrading to 2000, don't do anything until you have run
the hardware compatibility check beforehand. I considered upping from 98 to
2000 rather than XP, discounted the results of the compatibility check and
the upgrade completely and utterly destroyed my machine at the operating
system level, as most of the hardware was incompatible with 2000 (no drivers
usually). I got XP an installed it, and XP had drivers for everything, and
was sweet.

2. I must admit the spec of the machine sounds okay apart from a PCI
graphics card. Sure it was Generals whose blurb said that PCI cards were NOT
appropriate (might have been Call of Cuty, but I don't think so as CoD has
never given me any impression of struggling with graphics). However, since
then I read an article which states that improvements to PCI graphics means
that upcoming new PCI graphics cards will in their turn blow away AGP
graphics cards away for performance as PCI technology has rocketed ahead of
AGP.

3. When I upgraded my machine, I moved from a GeForce 2 MX4 64MB graphics
card to a GeForce 4 ATI 64MB(IIRC). That alone made all the difference as
the MX chipset is hopelessly out of date. Better mobo, doubling the RAM from
256 to 512MB and upping the processor from AMD1200 to 2000+ gave me a
machine more than capable of handling Generals and ZH (though I recently
discovered, while revisiting the campaigns whilst awaiting a replacement for
a router with fried EEPROM that on the final mission of each campaign, the
extra work is just about at the limit).

Hope it helps.

I did go into Adavanced Options and changed every setting down. I am now
getting 11 frames per second. Any Ideas how to speed it up more. I have a
128mb Vid card, would getting a 256mb pci card help at all?

Thanks

Try reading this little article about Generals' advanced detail settings:

http://www.planetcnc.com/features/te...pers/02-27-03/

You should also reduce your resolution to 800x600 if you can. As always, turn
off background applications like ICQ or MSN messenger or whatever (but not
Fraps, duh). Otherwise there's not much else you can do.

Not really. I don't think Generals even needs 128 MB of video ram unless you run
in a really high resolution (which you don't) or have all the details turned up
(which you also don't). The best option would be to buy a good AGP card.

I havent playedit online, but just this minute come off a skirmish with a
add on map, me agaist 5 brutal armies, a good few hours non stop, i tried
online but it says some files are differant etc etc, so wont do it, which it
says it needs like the update, i added many new maps some time ago so i
think thats the problem, it says reinstall but i dont want to lose all my
details etc etc, pity tho, when i get a new machine may try it then.

I did install it in a mates for a LAN skimrish, he has a 1gig Compaq
machine, forget if it was 32 or 64mb but it was onboard(no agp) so wouldnt
play, i added a 64 pci but still no luck.

Might try deleting and reloading C&C.
My system is has a slower processor and less memory, but runs C&C faster
then yours.
Double check every hardware and driver setting in your computer (even all
bios settings).
Are you using a firewall ?
