Default Hrmp technical trouble getting EQ going

Okay so I just get this fancy new Linksys router. I didn't really want
it but the roomies want to put their computers on the same internet
connection as mine. But I get ahead of myself - that hasn't happened
yet. All I've done is connected it to mine.

It *seems* to be working properly as far as I can tell - Internet
Explorer is working, and so is Agent (which is why you can see this
post at all).

But EQ? Fuhgettaboutit! It isn't even getting past the patcher. It
does a file check then thinks it needs to download a Timorous file,
then hangs (never comes close to finishing the file). At this point no
internet activity works, not IE, not Agent, and I have to reboot to
get it back.

I am open to suggestions. Occam's Razor and all that; the simplest
answer is most likely to be the best. Any ideas?

Quoth Ben Sisson :

I seem to recall EQ having lots of problems with certain firmware
revisions on Linksys routers. A Google search for "linksys" and
"everquest" is returning thousands of hits, some of them very recent, so
you can probably find relevant info and help that way.

I don't know your specific model, but this page in particular may be of
help:

From the shadows, the mysterious David Navarro <david@alcaudon.com>
(if that IS his real name) conspiratorially whispered:

Yes but this is a different problem than those, or at best a related
one; for one thing this problem manifests itself outside EQ as well.

It's almost like after a certain amount of bandwidth is used (and its
not much, just a few kb at most) the router refuses to accept any more
until its reset at its startup screen.

1) Check for updated firmware for the router.
2) If you happen to be on a Mac disable appletalk, that seems to lock up
some linksys models/firmware revisions.
3) try downloading and uploading some significant data, lets isolate
this as either an EQ problem or not an EQ problem.
4) exchange the router as defective if possible. Linksys routers are
usually pretty good, and if its a problem no one else is having. Its
possible you've got a dud.

Did that, no change

EQ on a Mac? Perish the thought!

Filesharing was a mixed bag - kazaa lite worked but emule did not. EQ
itself worked fine, but the patcher did not - it was the patcher that
guaranteed a freeze every time when it started its download. There was
no pattern I could see to when it would stop working while browsing.

A google search is showing a lot of people having same problem even
with different models.. but no fix has jumped out yet, its almost like
there isn't one yet.

Didn't figure you for a newbie

I hear that in several ways its better than the EQ the rest of us play...

Is it a new nouter? or used? upnp enabled ?

Just for s&g disable upnp in xp. Make sure your "Network Connections"
just shows a regular old LAN connection, and not some internet gateway or other nonsense.

a rash of recent posts of the same lockup problem on a variety of
hardware?? that seems unlikely...

One other question... is there anything funky about your ISP that you
know of?

Okay I will try this a bit later when I'm not in the middle of yet
another CR from RZtW attempt seven.

All Linksys routers though. Could be they all have the same inherent
design flaw somehow.

Nothing, its the same ISP as most cable users in Canada, very reliable
in every respect (except billing).

My Computer -> Manage -> services -> locate "Universal Plug and Play",
stop the service and set "start up" to "manual".

Shutdown, power cycle the router, boot back up.

With luck your pc should revert back to normal, will pick up an ip
address from the gateway via dhcp, and you'll be able to connect to
the net. If not, run the network setup wizard and make sure to say you
connect via a residential gateway.
Best of luck.

You aren't googling 'linksys' 'everquest'... are you?

Could be a design flaw or a firmware bug... but most people have no
trouble with eq + linksys so there is more too it than that... I
generally suspect Windows issues over Hardware firmware/issues in
absence of solid evidence to the contrary.

Hmmm... yeah Shaw is a decent isp.

I've recently done 2 fresh EQ installs - on both of them the patcher
would freeze intermittently. One got it's internet connection through
the DSL modem in an XP Pro machine, the other via a linksys to a
cable modem. On the second machine I finally got a the final 25
mintutes of patch download to occur without a freeze by stopping all
internet access from the other machines. However, now that the big
initial patch is done, none of my 3 machines, nor the 3 machines at
my friend's house have problems patching and entering the game.

It was at manual to start with.

I searched for Linksys router freeze network iirc.

Everquest ran fine (almost). The patcher didn't.

So do I but it has to be something in windows that deals directly with
the router, since I have no trouble with internet connection directly
plugged into the network card.
