EverQuest servers and the UK server, Venril Sathir, will be brought down
for an update. Sebilis and Kael Drakkal will not be affected by this
update. The estimated down time is 2 hours. - The SOE Game Operations Team

So, yes, Virginia, they are down... And I have time off from work...

Ah, so it's YOUR fault we can't play. You bastard! You should know by
now that if you take time off from work they'll quickly schedule a patch
to match your free time!

I'd say it is probably more likely that they are fixing the exploits wrecking
the economy...

....but that's just me.

They don't need to bring the servers down for that. Last one was
actually pushed through several hours after the servers had been
brought back up from the patch that morning.
