The first rule of thumb I see making the most sense is use an augment
on an item that is already strong in whatever that augment gives. So
for example if you are a ranger and get a +6 dex augment, you put it
in the best piece of dex gear you use. The second rule of thumb is to
augment better items before lesser items, and of course the third is
augment the least likely item to be upgraded any time soon.

That maximizes the lifespan of the augment before you upgrade, on
average (though of course shit happens sometimes and you upgrade in
unexpected places).

I don't know if you are able to do "hard" adventures yet, but many of my
guildies are getting upgrades from drops. This is a guild that is farming
many PoP mobs and is in VexThall. These LDoN drops are very nice. Save your
points, consider them a bonus from gaining exp. Once you get to the
"required" level, you will have even more points for your UBER earrings,
maybe you can get the UBER ring to match.

I actually don't die that much (anymore), but did have a close RL friend
give up on EQ after (un)dinging his Rogue back to 25th level around 30
times over two months.

Personally, I found it more irritating that I have to look on the net to
see what to save for.

This brings up another question ... has the drop rate of augs been
nerfed recently? Seeing far fewer of them than we did a while back.

I think so, I haven't actually "seen" where a nerfing has taken place, but I
have only seen 3 drop in my last 5-10 adventures. When LDoN dropped, I was
seeing multi drops per adventure.
Along the same lines: Bosses seem to be less in attendance now compared to
launch.
All good in my opinion. There needs to be a way to keep other zones
populated, if I were guaranteed a few chances at Augs/Boss loot per
adventure, I would never go anywhere else. I think they nerfed the Exp too,
but I don't see how if it is designed to be a certain level of mobs for your
group. It was almost like I seen a sudden drop in the amount of
exp/adventure.
