Although the details of what happens to your installed RETAIL HL2 when Steam
finds out about it are unsure (option 1. it doss nothing; option 2. it
copies it all in to its own "cache") you only have to worry about this if
you're short on disk space. Whereever Steam is installed (it should give
you an option!) ensure you install it to a drive with at least 10Gig free
space(I'm not joking). Don't do what I did and put it on C: (my C:
partition is restricted to "system" software/apps and Steam certainly
doesn't come under this category:-)

As regards updates, once you've authenticated the game via Steam, you never
have to use Steam ONLINE again and so you never have to get updates. I
suggest you be aware that if you are online and you start Steam up that it
will automatically hook up to its servers. I think it should at least ask
you if it can make the connection. Even then, if you're online and you run
Steam, the updating process is "fairly" controllable.

I hope I have'nt raised more questions than I've attempted to answer!

The Retailers will have a job to catch up with the latest Net Connection
requirement. I think there should be a "Note: Net Connection required"
sticker on the FRONT of the carton. But I doubt that'll happen. After-all
we are talking about a small number of people who might be affected by this.

Reading the many references to Steam and it's doings here in the ng, I'd
say you can put Steam where you want, and it will put your games where
and how IT wants. I won't really know until 16 Nov.

Actually, it does raise the need for more answers. That steam
autoconnects to its servers without express permission: Zone Alarm Pro.
Prehaps Valve will deem it important enough to include a switch in
Options.
