Default Problem with Half Life 1, chapter "We've Got Hostiles"

I'm playing HL1, and when I get into the elevator near the end of the
chapter "We've Got Hostiles," I die for no apparent reason. About
halfway up the elevator shaft, I can hear a helecopter, and my health
starts dropping one point at a time. I can still move my gun, but I
can't move from where I'm standing. Also, the elevator seems to be
stopped as well.

Anyone know the cause of this problem? Is there a fix?

Thanks,
Rob

very common problem in HL1 known as "the elevator bug" - there are
several known fixes/workarounds

the easiest, is just to jump while you're on the elevator, this should
stop gordon getting stuck. don't stand next to the walls. some people
report that crouching while the elevator is moving helps aswell.
if this fails, switching your graphics settings to software mode
should work (you can switch back to OpenGL after you're done)

Robert Debelak proclaimed....

Hehe.

You're leaving this a little late aren't you?

See Bench's reply for a fix.

kinda an edging problem. you get stuck on a invisible edge and crushed between
the invisible unmovable object and the elevator's irresistible force.

one easy way to fix it is to run halflife's .exe file with the switch that
forces it into debug mode (-debug, probably), load the game, go to console, turn
noclip on (which means you can ignore edges of objects, and can fly through
things, gravity doesn't affect you, etc), fly up to the top of the shaft and
exit the elevator, save your game, then go to console and turn noclip off. then
you can exit half life, and load it up normally, and load from the top where
you're outside the elevator, and continue as normal.

That happened to me at work a few months back as I was in the elevator going
to my office. Very irritating. These days I always crouch down when I'm
travelling up in a lift; I get some funny looks but you can't be too
careful.

That's the easy fix? Sounds much easier than just jumping
up and down or switching to software mode...
You can't just turn noclip on without enabling cheats first.
There are also known issues when cheats have been used
which sometimes won't let you finish the game. Not always
the case, however.

Robert, stick with Bens advice.

Yep, It's ok as long as you turn sv_cheats off straight afterwards.
From what I recall, if you have cheats on when you kill Nihilanth, the
game sits there and doesn't do anything - you've reached the end of the
game, but you don't get the final sequence.

Having successfully killed Nihilanth by cheating (the whole freaking
game itself, starting with mamma headcrab, was cheating, so I don't feel
bad). You have to be very careful and ready your weapon before you deal
the final blow. Quickly pause the game, and disable cheats, also
disabling noclip if you have it on, and then unpause and hit Nihilanth
one more time. You should be able to see the ending if you do it correctly.

*shrug*

it's really not as complicated as it sounds. you're just turning debug mode on
temporarily so you can use the developer's game testing tool to get past the
section that is buggy, saving, and turning it back off.

i discovered this method because i hit the bug in the elevator and jumping etc
wouldn't get me past it, so i had to find another way.
