My sound has gone crazy on TFC and HL.

Okay, so I was messing around installing some software synths. Uninstalled
the synths -- but then discovered this problem.
Now the sound is all weird. It's like I'm in a swimming pool, but it's not
just reverb -- I've got odd sounds for everything. Wierd distorted
explosions when I fire the shotgun, a seires of little high-pitched beeps
when I prime a grenade... etc.

How can I get back the sounds I love?

This is a well do***ented fault within the game. You need to up your mouse
sensitivity and this should sort the problem.
