I just downloaded and installed ECP 1.071. It looks good! Many new
editions--including an easier way to change your ECP settings.

The problem is that it keeps crashing on me. When I launch OFP, I get an
error message that states I've got to have OFP version 1.92 installed. I
was running on 1.91, the last official version, but because ECP 1.071 looked
so good, I downloaded the newest beta patch 1.96.

So, I've got 1.96 installed but ECP 1.071 still thinks I've got OFP 1.91--I
still get that "need 1.92" error message when I launch the game.

I also notice that OFP, at the top of my main menu screen, says that I'm
running OFP 1.91 as well (even though I installed 1.96 twice, just to be
sure).

Will ECP 1.071 work with OFP 1.92 ONLY?

I guess I could try that.

Even though I get the error message needing OFP 1.92, missions will launch.
I play for a bit, then the game crashes.

It looks like it's back to ECP 1.043 for me. That's the last stable version
of ECP I found that I can run.

Within your OFP program file you should find a new 1.96 icon - use that, not
your old icon which prompts 1.91 start-up.
