Defragging is always a smart move. Let the system
decide whether it is
necessary or not, and let i work overnight. The first
thing I would check
is the available memory, and the second thing the
available harddisk space
for the swab file. What the system moves around in
Oblivion is more graphics
and less data, and that can easily make the pc works
overtime.

One simple thing you can do, is to save your old
savegames on a removable
medium or at least zip them. Otherwise they are
included in the games
managing process at startup. I keep them in an
Archival folder under MyGames
but outside Oblivion, and I keep them as zip files or
sfx files
