I downloaded 3 cds of Mandrake Linux 9.1 last night, then tried to
install it this morning. First of all, it didn't want to work with my
keyboard, so I figured, ok. Just go with the default settings, it
should be fine. A few clicks later I rebooted to find a bunch of
01010101s and a non-booting machine. After a couple of failed attempts
at rebuilding the MBR and bootloader, I realized that Mandrake had
found my 2 hard drives. Yes I do have 2 hard drives, but they are on a
RAID setup! It 'found' a 100 GB Windows partition on hd1, a 60 GB hard
drive, and it found hd2, another identical 60 GB hard drive, to be
'empty'. What it had done was to fill up the second hard drive, or try
to, as a Linux formatted 3 partition standard Mandrake setup. Since it
wanted this to be 60 GB, in addition to the 100 GB Windows partition
on my 120 GB RAID setup. Before hand I had sectioned off 10 GB of
empty space with Partition Magic, and in setup, I told it to use all
the "empty space." After that, my computer didn't work to well.

I went through the repair utilities in Windows setup, and in Mandrake
setup, neither seemed to work particularly well. Eventually I ended up
reverting to Partition Magic boot disks and reformatting the whole
thing NTFS like it was in the first place. Then I reinstalled Windows,
and luckily for me, most of my important files are still sitting on my
brother's 120 GB hard drive as a backup I made a month and a half ago
when I first put in the second hard drive and RAID setup. So at least
I'm not too screwed, though everything I've gotten over the last month
or so is kaput. (including Scrapped Princess, Muey )

So in light of this new experience, I'm going to steer clear of Linux
as long as I have a RAID, which will be indefinitely. Sure, I could
probably hunt around and find a Linux Highpoint RAID driver, but I
don't want to bother now.
