How can I play a game mode where computer players don't start as my allies,
but I can gain allies throughout the game?

Before I upgraded to conquerors I could play regicide and do this. Also,
should I have the teams set to (-) or (?) ? What's the difference?

I've never seen the computer offer an alliance on Moderate, Hard & Hardest,
the computer opponents often offer an alliance on Easy & Easiest.

So the difficulty setting is probably the only was to get alliances made in
the game; except with human players.

Thanks, I think that's it - I always started on easy mode.
Anyway of offering a computer player an alliance and having them accept?
I've payed tributes to others and set my diplomacy to neutral or ally but
never get a response.

Of course you get a response, the computer uses the resources to attack
you.......
