I wish they would release a free download of "Daggerfall"! That sounds
so interesting! I wonder if my XP could handle that? Also, where can
I get walkthrus for all the factions & quests? NOT just the main quest!

I don't think Daggerfall will work on XP without a lot of work with 3rd
party programs. As every quest not related to the main storyline are
randomly generated there can be no published solutions. Every dungeon
except the main ones are randomly created and can be a real nightmare to
navigate especially when you are running with a tight deadline.
This randomness was one of the main things I liked about Daggerfall (and
Arena) compared to Morrowind. I hated the fact that artifact X was
always in dungeon Y in Morrowind. Plus Daggerfall merchants inventory
varied over time and compared to your level. You could not buy a piece
of adamantium armor at level one, much less a full suit.

As Mr. Ryder said, there's some 3rd-party software involved. I use the
original media with DOSBox 0.63, and it runs. The mouse input is a
little sluggish, but I think the game behaved like that anyway. Works
for Arena, too.

I put Arena and DOSBox on a USB drive. I used to take it to work and
play at lunch. No software to install! I'd bring it back home and
play the same game.

Interesting! Could you please explain to this old boy just what equipment
you utilize to accomplish this, USB drive"?
Thanks,

I wouldn't exactly call it a lot of work, nor do you need 'programs'. You
need 'a' program, namely Dosbox. It should work fine through Dosbox.
I had it set up in a matter of minutes. That's basically how long it takes
to install and set up just about any game these days.
I have an AMD 3800+ X2, Ati X1800 GTO and 2 Gigs of system RAM. It runs a
bit sluggish, but it's entirely playable.
You'll need the original game on CD, though, if you're not a warez kiddie.
Thankfully, I'm so old, and suffering from a collector's type syndrom,
that I still have the original game aaamd box tucked away safely.

Thanks for everyone's input. Would Dosbox work on other games, too?
Like "Star Trek: Final Unity"? Sorry to get off-topic.

And I'm interested in that employer who allows private USB-drives to
plug in to his rigs ;-)

I guess they updated the program since I last tried. I know with Arena
I ended up using two or three different programs to get everything
working. I finally gave up as Dosbox did not support expanded memory at
that time.

Daggerfall doesn't use expanded memory. It uses DPMI for memory access.
DosBox has officially supported protected mode games since 0.63 which
came on in Nov 2004.

DosBox 0.65 with much improved speed and protected mode was released in
March 2006,
