I'm a few days into Oblivion, playing a sneaky, non-spellcasting type, and I
want to get started on buying enchantments for items - so, as a first step,
I need to capture a soul (and then use it to make an item of Soul Trap, to
capture some more).

So far, I haven't come across any scrolls of Soul Trap, and the only weapon
I found that cast it was an axe, which really doesn't suit my idiom. So, if
someone could direct me to a merchant selling scrolls of Soul Trap - or,
alternatively, a light blade / bow / arrows of same - I'd be very grateful.

I'm still partway through the Mages' Guild recommendations, so I don't have
access to Arcane University yet.

I'm not aware on a merchant that reliably has scrolls of that sort,
however, many merchants do have pre-filled soulgems, and they can also
be found in treasure fairly often.

Another alternative that may take a while is to close any old Oblivion
gate by grabbing the sigil stone, then keep reloading until you get one
that enchants soul trap on a weapon...

RWG (I've been kinda lucky using that method to collect the kinds of
enchantments I want before bothering with the Mage Guild quests...)

I did the mages guild quests first, and when you get to pick a staff, i
picked one that can cast soul trap. I swap to it just before delivering a
killing blow, staffs seem to be all but useless IMHO, but this soul trap one
has proved its worth.

Having now reached the University, and found out how relatively easy it is
to create enchanted items, I'll wait until I find a caster selling a Soul
Trap spell. After getting used to the way Morrowind handled soul gems, I
hadn't realised that about half the gems I'd picked up did indeed contain
souls, until it was mentioned that they're fairly common - I was looking for
gems labelled by the name of the soultrapped animal, and totally missed that
they were filled gems.

So far, it's not so much the things I have to learn that are catching me out
in Oblivion, it's the things I have to un-learn.
