Default So, here's a curious thing...

Anyone else ever have this happen?

I was meandering in a general way back towards Imperial City. Generally
a good little boy, at least in sight of others and with no bounties on
me... I happened upon a group of NPCs that was engaged in battle. At
first, I thought it was to be a random encounter with bandits coming for
me, so I got off the horse to defend myself as one of the NPCs killed
another. I suddenly got messages that said I was kicked out of the Dark
Brotherhood, the Thieve's Guild and the Mage's Guild in quick sequence.

I panicked and went immediately to my last saved game, but it was only 3
or 4 minutes before (on the way out of a dungeon). I had done,
literally, nothing of consequence from their to when I encountered the
fight. However, this time, instead of meandering, I picked up the next
mages quest I hadn't finished, thinking maybe I could salvage my
relationship by finishing it and then make things OK again with the DB
and Thieves later in the game. I finished the mage quest and fast
traveled to Arcane, where I was promoted.

The "kicked out" messages didn't appear again. For a while I thought
they related to my re-approaching civilization (Imperial City) after
doing something nefarious to a character affiliated with all three
groups (besides me... and WHO would fit this odd profile??). Now I'm
convinced that they were a result of the fight I observed in passing. I
didn't even get within 30 yards of these people! Never shot an arrow,
nothing?!? Why would one NPC killing another count against me as a
witness? Anyone heard of this before? It does sound a lot like many
messages from people I've seen where they were suddenly dropped from a
guild and don't know how.

You'll understand what happened if you watch the final episode of Seinfeld.

HAHA! Priceless!

We're going to make a game about nothing! I did happen to see this orc run
over a beggar with his horse. Next time I was in town, the orc was
following the beggar around like he was his chauffeur or something... What
a world!

Yes, its a bug I'm afraid. My first character ran into it three or
four times. Save often and reload if you encounter it. There has been
speculation that its related to your horse being struck in combat but
I've had it happen while my horse was miles away in a nice cozy stable
so I'm not convinced it has anythign to do with horses. I'm convinced
that at least one time what happened is an NPC pick pocketed another
NPC and I got blamed for it.

I tend to reload and hten avoid that area for awhile.

Interesting... pickpocketing? Could be. Michael suggested it was because
I didn't help, but it was literally less than a second from the time
that I had identified it as NPCs battling amongst themselves as opposed
to running towards me. I was literally in the process of getting off my
horse so I could approach, and would have helped had there been time. As
a matter of fact, it should have been too soon for one of them to even
be killed even if it were a wimpy character... Quill Weave (a total
pacifist) even lasts much longer in a fight, so minor theft may've been
the trigger.

I've had that happen to me quite a few times. Once I was riding down towards
this pool and jumped off to pick some water lillies. All of a sudden I had
been booting out of the mage guild for theiving apparently I think. I scanned
around and there was a hedge wizard nearby, he wasn't there a minute before
I'm sure but either way I hadn't stolen anything from him.

my guess is that you have affiliations with all 3 faction who were in combat
at once. as you approached each 3 faction recognised you as an ally to
themselves, but also as a friend of an enemies. all 3 called for your help
triggering their counterparts to hate you. by not assisting each 3 and by
being affiliated with eache's enemy, you got kicked out.

maybe..... damned if you do and damned if you don't.

LOL.

OK, I have an oddity to report. I created a new character after I
applied the patch, and then fast-travelled back to the sewer-dungeon
that you first exit after a quick trip to Weynon Priory. I was shocked
to see a Mystic Dawn stooge in full sumoned armor standing there,
waiting as if to assassinate me. He was totally passive. I walked away,
and he followed me.

I mapped away, and he was gone. BUT the next time I mapped anywhere, he
reappeared. He continued to randomly reappear whenever I mapped
anywhere, until I killed him. Nobody else ever saw him.

Oh, I also found a slaughterfish flopping around inland a mile from any
water.
