Default Dishonorable Kills Question/ PVP kills

I was running thru a hostile town (I guess) and a NPC listed as "civilian"
attacked me. I fought back, he died and I got pinned with a dishonorable
kill.

Also , shortly there after I was quickly PVP'd by a player (without) a duel
challenge.. Can opposite side players just whack you without warning in
certain areas?

I am a newbie..please smite me easy.

PS.

anyone have a macro that publicly humiliates a players who challenge you to
a duel when they are lvl 60 and your level 14?? (those must be the same
people who kick puppies and kittens)

You should have ran and escaped. Killing civilians gives you a nasty honor
penalty. This is to (try to) prevent opposing faction players from just
slaughtering your quest-givers and vendors out of hand, to screw the other
side up. Now you know, don't do it.

When you fight an opposing npc, you're automatically put into PvP mode. You
were then fair game for any opposing player who wanted to whack you. This
lasts for 5 minutes after the last time you commit a hostile act, then you
revert
to non-PvP. There is a PvP 'hostile' icon that appears on the left side of your
main player icon, when you are in PvP mode.

How harsh is this penalty? I was frustrated this morning, and went and
wiped out every lowbie I could find in ashenvale. They ended up going
to Astranaar, so I just ran up and AoE'd everythign to death. Was very
satisfying.

Anyway, in the process I picked up two DKs. How harsh are the penalties
and what exactly is it? Does it mean from now on I always get
penalised, or just for this week? Can I still progress along the PvP
ranks. (I reallhy would like to get to General one day)

If you want to get higher pvp ranks, AVOID DK's AT ALL COSTS!! Your rank
will go down so fast, it will take a lot of work to get it back up again.
Got one myself once when the AB raid I was in went to Refuge Point while
waiting.
That made me drop a rank, could have been Champion by now.

And to complicate things - the definition of "civilian" is relative.

For example - in Arathi Basin there are 2 Ally NPC's of differing levels
overlooking the Grom Shek farm. At level 40, one is red and attackable yet
the other is "yellow", ie, the level is to low so yeilds a dishonour point
if killed by me. Problem was this weekend, I was helping our guild warriors
on their cyclonian quest and they were level 30-32 and hence for them both
NPC's were red and fair game.

After we successfully repulsed a gank attempt in the thundering charm area,
we chased the fleeing alliance down to Grom Shak farm. Both NPC's aggroed on
one of our 30 warriors and were killed before I even had a chance to
register there was a problem. BAM - my first DK for being in the group that
killed the NPC and because I was the only one at level 40, I was the only
one to get the DK. The rest of the group was within the NPC's level range so
it was all fine and dandy.

Therefore, being in a raid on a town is very risky proposition as far as
generating DK's, because other people killing stuff perfectly fine for their
lower level, can generate DK's for you at your level.

The rules are: taking part in killing an opposing NPC which would yeild no
experience for you is a DK. It is this level relativity that causes so much
confusion and catches so many people out.

Hia

ehm?
Since when has DK anything to do with the level of the NPC? Or your level?
if they haven't changed this in 1.10 without telling anybody, it works like this:
you are in a group/raid which kills a civilian NPC -> you get a DK.
you get a DK -> you IMMEDIATELY lose honour and/or rank.
Killing players never gives you DKs.

"Bother!", said Pooh, as he read Urs Steiner's latest post to
alt.games.warcraft.

But the definition of "civilian" is level-dependant. Try it sometime.
Head to STV as a level 40 alliance. Check out Samantha Swifthoof. Not a
civilian. I like killing her, just to light up the Local Defense for the
Horde. Then go back to grinding, and my flag has worn off by the time they
get there.

But then you come back at level 60, on your way to a ZG run, and you'd
better not try that trick anymore. She's a civilian now. Because she's
vastly below your level now.
