I log on with a character who's currently not in a guild. I turn off the
guild recruitment channel, and go on with virtual life.

I log on again a day or two later, and the guild recruitment channel has
been enabled again.

I realize they turned it on by default when they put it in, but does this
mean it must ALWAYS be on? Is there a way to turn it off and make it stay
off, or is this just going to have to be part of the log-in routine now?

I'm not sure of the specific answer, but there is a fairly simple
solution.

Just join the next guild that asks you, then turn off the guild channel
and essentially ignore the guild. That way you won't be bugged by the
guild channel, the incessant charters shoved in your face, etc.

If you ever decide you do want an actual guild, you can always /gquit
this one and join the one you found that you like.

You might have the "Auto-join guild recruitment channel" checkbox ticked in
the main menu -> interface options -> basic dialog box (this seems to have
appeared after the latest patch I think, but can't be bothered to see if
it's documented anyplace). Same happened to me until I unchecked said
checkbox.

Thanks--it's not that big an issue; I only get on with her a couple of
times a week. If I start playing her more than that I'll get her into the
guild my main character's in. Nice that there's not a limit on guild size
in the game, so there's not a concern about letting alts into a guild.

Try checking it and unchecking it again - sounds stupid, but just
might work...

Good one, although I believe that the longer word would be
pneumonaultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosily. Still longer than the
original, but only by 1 letter, 1 shorter than the suggested word.
