Default Playability of World of Warcraft

I just decided to give WoW a try.
I followed instructions from WoW europe page - got guest pass and
downloaded client.
Succesfuly registered guest account and started to play.
System assigned me Aerie Peak realm.
Average latency is about 3000 - 4000 - so game is unplayable.
How to check how high latency will I have manually chosing/changing realm ?
I heard WoW is great game but experiencing performance like that can
discourage any player to try this game.

I have had latency around 3 to 4 seconds rarely, it usually means there
is some major issue with the server.

I've seen some higher latency lately on Alleria, but nothing that kept
anyone from playing. It only lasted a very short time.

However, high latency can be more than just a server issue.

It could be your own ISP having problems, you could be using wireless
(which is terrible for gaming due to the interference it is subject to),
you could be sharing your 'net connection with other machines which are
file-sharing or running bandwidth hungry applications, your own machine
could be infected with spyware/virii/trojans which are using your 'net
connection to spread themselves around, you could be using cable and all
the 12-year olds in your neighborhood are downloading the latest N'Sync mp3
or simply logging in to activate that trojan they infected your machine
with so they can conduct a DDOS attack on Blizzard, your wireless router is
unsecured and open for anyone to use and some folks in the house two houses
down from you are logging in and taking advantage of the bandwidth you are
paying for, etc.

Yeah, it could be a lot more than just the server.

Now - everything is clear - It is just blizzard.
Their Background downloader is responsible for that.
I started game - patched to 1.10.2 and started to play.
I didn't alt-tabbed back to windows - (I did that on third attempt when
started to play with latency around 100 and it increased to 2000).
At least not early enough to see what caused the trouble.

A background download can certainly increase your latency. Mine can
climb to over 3 seconds if other stuf is hogging my connection (my son
downloading stuff to his machine while I'm playing, for example, or
the backup software on my work laptop uploading the stuff it's set to
save) . I haven't seen problems caused by the background downloader,
though. It's hard to see what it would have been downloading if you'd
already patched your machine to the latest level and were playing it,
too.

I've been playing for over a year, and I've seen bad latency several
times (including a couple of weeks when it climbed to unplayable
levels every evening at about 6pm, and stayed there until 8pm before
dropping again). On every occasion, that I can remember, though, it
wasn't Blizz themselves, though, but network problems in between.
Server problems tend to manifest themselves as lag, not latency.

Cheers - Ian
