How do you swim (get under the surface)?

I try to put view directly above and hit the W key..

"Bother!", said Pooh, as he read Josh Carter's latest post to
alt.games.warcraft.

There's two ways to do it.

While swimming forward, hold down your right mouse button and tip the
camera up so that you're looking down. (Note that the left mouse button
will tip the camera without actually changing your character's facing
direction, so it won't work).

While swimming forward, hit the insert and delete keys to tip your
character up and down. I think that delete is down, but I'm not 100% sure
so just try both. I believe that this second method actually makes you
move up and down faster, but I haven't raced someone to prove it.

Took me awhile to get it working smoothly too.

What I usually do now is hit the num-lock key (auto run), and use the
right mouse (not left, which I kept trying when my mind was skipping
over the 'right' in the instructions) to steer.

That makes it pretty easy to go in any direction I want. When I see a
mob in the distance, I right click on it then go back to steering to put
myself at the right distance (in spell range or strike range, depending
on char type), then hit up-arrow once to stop.

I normally hold both mouse buttons down and direct myself around with the
mouse - not the easiest way but seems simpler than other methods I've
heard.

Go to key mappings and make sure you have one for "lower" and one for
"higher", or whatever they're called. (Down/up?)

On day-1, my default key mappings had nothing mapped for this, and it
drove me nuts!

I used to do that, but now I use right button to control my movement
direction, and left button to control my view direction. Works on land as
well, and is much more precise than WASD or arrow keys when auto-running
down the road and trying to steer based on a distant landmark. Just steer
with the mouse with the right button held down.
