My parents currently run a Cascade 1500 pump, connected to one of th
old Cyprio Planter 500 filters. This filter is some age now, and th
UVC sheath is apparently sealed in and difficult to remove (and als
very dirty on the surface).

The pond is about 470 UK gallons, and the above pump has a max flowrat
of 1500 litres (330 GPH). Now I understand that the 500gallon filter
is supposedly max 250GPH. The filter is becoming a bind to clean an
I'm dubious about its efficiency actually. There is probably abou
4-5ft of fish in there. Recommendations please? If the pump is mor
than 250GPH, should I be looking at filter that take a flowrate highe
than this? or is a 250GPH filter still ok? Mt feeling is that
should look at Ecomax 4500 (500GPH max).

Suggestions/comments welcome. They do not want to buy another pump

If they don't want to buy a different pump (and right they are, IMO) I'd
get a bigger filter. If commercial is the only thing you're considering,
I'd get one that claims to filter 1,000 gallons of pond. For sure it will
handle this pond size and require less routine maintenance. ~ jan

We continue to love our veggie filters. Bottom drain, annual
maintenance. Slow water passage gives setlement. We also have a UV.

YES, YES, a veggie filter is the only way to go.
Mine has been running 24/7 for 4 years not with out
cleaning. My water is crystal clear all the way to bottom
4 feet deep.

Yep, listen to Jim and the others. Veggie filter all the way. I got
mine up and running this season and have been very happy with the
results and benefits. My water cleared up a couple of months ago and is
crystal clear to 54 inches. Plus, it gets to be home to all sorts of
interesting creatures! I have a small area of clear water (no plants)
near the inlet. Very interesting to just sit and observe for a few
minutes. You probably won't be disappointed.
