The December solstice occurs tonight, at 2:04 a.m. EST
on the 22nd (11:04 p.m. on the 21st PST) — making this the
longest night of the year. The Sun is farthest south for
the year and begins its six-month return northward. The
December solstice also marks the official start of winter
in the Northern Hemisphere (summer in the Southern Hemisphere).

Monday, December 22

Face north in early evening this week and look very high
for the M-shaped constellation Cassiopeia. The M is rather
flattened. Its three brightest stars form its left side.
