Default Topping Silver Birch trees (large exchange)

The message <vkl4h13l1u4bcd@corp.supernews.com>
from "hendo2002" <john@thehendersons.surfonwater.com> contains these words:

No, you won't kill them.

Cut the trunk at an angle and cover with one of the proprietary
water/disease-proofers available at large nurseries.

You cannot top out or even prune Silver Birch or they will rot out very
easily

They also easily grow to at least 50ft

Default Topping Silver Birch trees (painted)

I think they will be safe if the wound is painted immediately with one of
the concotions sold for the purpose. Actually acrylic paint does the job
well enough.

Default Topping Silver Birch trees (silver tree birch winter)

Carry out any work in winter when the tree is dormant, an at very least
get the advice of a arboriculturalist if not employing one to do the
work. Birch can be thinned/reduced but I'm not sure that I would
recommend topping.. mature heights vary depending on exact species and
soil conditions/locations.. Though 30 ft sounds about right for a true
silver birch..

No point in having Silver Birch if you spoil that gorgeous shape. Just get them out and plant something more
suitable, better than mutilating them.

I thank you all for your opinions - the decision is that the trees stay as
they are , I would never get rid so they can grow to their hearts content
:-)

Phew, that's a relief. This is an example of why I don't like pruning Birches
http://website.lineone.net/~rodcraddock/bodnantbirches.html
Nobody with a soul could prune those - could they?
