I have a clean install of Slackware 10.1 with the only outside applications
installed being UT2004demo, Acroread, RealPlayer, and Flash.
Sound was working with Flash animations, but has strangely disappeared, and
I don’t know what I did to cause this. I’ve googled for this problem, and
I found a hundred different people having this problem with a hundred
different suggested solutions.
Does anyone know the right solution ™?

Presuming you use ALSA (as anybody should – no matter what some say), this
is how I use it:
1. I have dmix setup, since my sound card (cmipci) doesn’t support
hardware mixing of multiple audio programs.
2. I have averything setup to use ALSA (arts for ex. programs that use the
play command are configured to use aplay instead…)
3. I start Firefox with this command ‘aoss /opt/firefox-1.0.1/firefox’
x. You can start any other program that requires OSS sound with the aoss
program. That will ‘hack’ the program to use the ALSA libraries instead of
using OSS directly.
Note: Alsa also suport OSS emulation on the kernel side, but if you use that
you loose the software mixing capability. Software mixing is done by the
user-space ALSA libraries, and can’t be done if the program directly
communicates with the OSS device (/dev/dsp).

None of this explains exactly how this problem started. Do you know the
reason this isn’t working? Under Slackware 10, I never had this problem.
Under 10.1, I might have had sound in Flash at first, but no more.

I removed gnome from my system, and now Flash plays sound in Konqueror, but
not in Firefox.
Any tips would be appreciated. I don’t know where to begin to look at this.
